Brendan trudged with his pack across the muddy, well-worn path. A small patch of blue sky shone down and plenty of bug Pokemon buzzed around. The sun shone through a thin layer of clouds. Wild Pokemon of all types and kinds flew, galloped, and swam all around them. It had been Rose's brilliant idea to come to the safari zone. But then again, it wasn't the worst place to train, just that there were better ones. Fang hovered, or rather, zoomed around at what seemed like light-speed pace. Sparks flew around and evaporated wherever he went. Brendan laughed, looking at his eager Pokemon. Well, they would need that energy later.
Anyway, it was time to learn the ropes of battling and whatnot. If they were to stand any chance at beating the West Wind City gym leader, they were gonna need practice. A lot of that. He stopped thinking for a moment, listening to the sounds of a few rain droplets cascading down. Thunder rumbled in the distance.
He turned back to Rose, looking thoughtful. "Do you want to have a practice battle?" At the sound of the word "battle", Fang sped right back towards Brendan. He was excited. "I'd be nice if we could get a little bit of experience before trying our luck against the wild Pokemon." He took off his satchel, and threw it onto a dry rock, and smiled. "I'll let you have the first move. Ladies first, at any rate."

Of course, the place she had to pick was THIS place.
Just like Cryse Town, Cryse Cove was too marshy and cloudy for Rose's taste. She trudged grumpily through the muddy ground, swatting away leaves from trees that hung too low or flies that buzzed too much. Why couldn't they go to Fitzgem first? Right, because her granny had told her not to. Rose would have wanted to be training in the open air instead of a cramped swampy cove. Well, this was their only choice.
Fate was following close behind, gritting her teeth as she stepped through the mud, getting her paws wet and sending splashed of liquid dirt onto her newly groomed fur. She whimpered to Rose to let her know that she didn't want to walk, then jumped off the road onto some just as wet grass. She wiped off as much mud as she could, then jumped at Rose, landing on her shoulder, sending the girl staggering a bit. "Oh, Fate, why'd you have to do that?"
Fate, scared that she would blow up with anger, sighed in relief, then stationed herself lying on her shoulders, front paws leaning over, back paws draped over her back. Satisfied, she smiled and leaned against Rose's head and tried to sleep.
She then heard the word battle and twitched her ear. At this moment, it was the last word she wanted to hear. She grumpily sat up on Rose's shoulder and saw Brendan with his Tynamo, Fang, ready to battle. Rose looked at Fate.
"Are you ready to battle?" Fate shot a nasty glare at Rose, then jumped down onto the side of the road. She bristled her fur, then crouched down.
"Zorua, use Leer!" Disappointed, Fate stood up straight again and locked eyes with Fang. She made herself look as scary as possible and her eyes began to glow. Well, she'd be able to attack that little Pokemon later with better results...

Fang hadn't been exactly focused on Fate. Apparently, his ADHD riddled mind, just like Brendan's had the good sense to look everywhere else BUT Zorua. He smiled, knowingly, as Tynamo zoomed around. He kicked some mud away from his boots, and swatted away a few Nincada. He composed himself before telling Fang what to do. "Tynamo, hit Zorua with Thunder Wave!" Fang looked around, casually before responding. Letting out a tiny roar, tiny sparks began to flash and glow around Tynamo. He roared yet again, before a wave of thunder arced toward Fate.

Of course, Fate hadn't been able to get a good aim of Leer at Fang, so she had become angry. Along with being shy and scared, Fate had terrible anger problems. If she can't get Fang to look at her, she'd force Fang to look at her. When the Thunder Wave shot at Fate, she leaped forward and dodged it. She could hear Rose telling her to use Leer again, so she had a good idea. She leaped at Fang, eyes red and glowing, roaring in anger, planning to pin him down and force him to look at her.

Fang laughed as Fate came roaring at him with her eyes in an angry red glare. To him, as to Brendan, life was a joke. Anyway, Brendan had told him to do something about that. He saw, as time seemed to slow, how Zorua's paws were aimed to pin him down. After the initial contact, Tynamo, smiled, and bolted off in the opposite direction. However, he did catch a glimpse of Fate's eyes, filled with hatred. He shivered for a moment, letting his guard down. It wasn't so easy to catch an eel. Especially when it was slippery. Real slippery. In the background Brendan was saying something about a beam. He shrugged, as if he could do that, and began preparing for a Charge Beam. An orb of bright electricity began forming near his mouth, and in an instant, he aimed and fired the yellow beam of surging energy at Fate. As he did, his blood surged, as he increased his energy by a little.

This time, Zorua's anger peaked and she snarled with pure hatred at Tynamo. Her eyes were glowing, but not with a Leer, but fury. While she was consumed by this full emotion, she did not prepare for Charge Beam and it hit her right on her head. She screeched and was thrown backwards, hitting the ground and knocking the air out of her. However, she felt a change run through her while she had been flung into the air. When she got up again, she found that she was a lot closer to the ground than before and that she had a sudden urge to dig a hole or climb a tree. Her legs flexed with the temptation, and while she did that she realized that she had two extra legs.
From what Rose saw, when Fate had been hit by the Charge Beam, she had glowed for a second, then hit the ground as a completely different Pokemon. She seemed to be getting used to being a Spinark a few seconds afterwards. From her study of Pokemon, Rose knew that this was Fate's ability, Illusion. She had turned into a Pokemon from the forest. Confused on what to do, she called out, "Fate, use, um, whatever you think is best."
Whatever you think is best. So Rose didn't know her own Pokemon's moves. Then again, Fate didn't know what they were until a couple of seconds ago. So, she pinpointed Fang, determined to catch him this time, and scrambled forward, unused to six legs, horn gleaming purple, getting ready for a Poison Sting.

Fang smirked with glee when his attack hit Zorua head-on. That glee, though, soon turned to confusion, then fear, as Fate suddenly disappeared. Brendan looked around, confused as well. Then it hit him. Zorua's illusion. He looked around, desperately looking for something that Fate would've transformed into. There. Spinark. Brendan called out to Fang, though, but it was too late. Time slowed.
And Fate came closer.
And closer.
And caught Tynamo off-guard as she scored a direct hit. Fang recoiled in pain, and staggered, or rather, floated back a few feet, grimacing in pain. His expression soured, as did Brendan's. Now this was going to be a real battle.
Brendan ground his feet into the muddy slosh, a few drops splattering on his jeans. His usual laid-back smile was replaced by a expressionless composure, now showing now emotion. Looking at Tynamo, he said, calmly. "Fang, Thunder Wave. Again." Matching his trainer's emotions, Tynamo frowned, then charged up a bolt of pure energy, which rocketed toward Fate at lightning speed.

As Fate sunk her new horn into Fang, she smiled with pleasure, but not because she was hurting something, of course, because she had finally scored a hit. She flipped backwards, now agile on her many legs, and landed on the ground lightly. She flexed them again, very happy from the pleasure of using six. Then she saw a flash and instinctively rolled away. Rose told her to do the same thing: do what she thought was best. She opened her tiny mouth and sprayed spider webs at Fang. She thought that there wasn't any Thunder Wave to dodge any more, but she didn't know that it had bounced off a rock and was now coming her way again. It hit her with force. She felt hair raise on her hairless body and realized that she was changing back into Zorua. A jolt went through her body and she suddenly went rigid. There was still the String Shot though that might slow down Fang as well as her.

Fang was gloating in triumph. That was short-lived, however, when a string shot suddenly fired towards him and he found himself using every fiber of his strength to even move. He was breathing hard now, exhausted by exertion. Brendan watched with growing concern. He decided that it had to be now or never. A shimmer appeared in his eye, as a breakthrough came into his head. He wiped away a drop of sweat from his face, then turned toward Fang. "Let's finish this Fang! Charge Beam, go!." Once again, Tynamo began charging up for another shot.
This was different, however, as he put everything he had left into one last surge. He concentrated, sweating hard. Amps of electricity began arcing back and forth between his tiny body. Letting out a savage cry, a pillar of pure energy fired toward Fate, sparks erupting everywhere. Brendan frowned. If this wouldn't stop Rose, nothing would.

Fate was frozen to the spot for a second, then she was free. Being paralyzed was a lot more frustrating then she thought. When Fang came in with the Charge Beam, she knew she couldn't dodge. Hoping that the paralysis wouldn't stop her, she lifted her foreleg, let it glow, then raced towards the oncoming yellow beam. She jumped into the air and intercepted it with a Scratch attack. It was hard to hold it, but she just managed to force it back. She fell down, exhausted. She heard Rose call out for her to use Scratch again, so she leaped forward, baring her claws again, slower because of paralysis.

Both Brendan and Fang gasped when Fate managed to deflect Fang's Charge Beam. But the Tynamo wasn't one to give up, and neither was Brendan. He glanced at Zorua, who was coming up to claw Tynamo. He knew that after another hit, Fang wouldn't be able to continue. No mistakes allowed. He planted a foot into the wet grass, and yelled, "Tynamo, intercept Zorua with Tackle." He dashed toward Fate at an insane speed, and met with head-on at full power. However, he was thrown back, and failed to get up twice before finally floating back up. He was tired, all right, but still had some fight left. Brendan, grinned, seeing the determination on his partner's face. He commanded, "Now use Spark!" Fang began to charge himself up, as he did before, but instead of releasing the energy as a beam of electricity, he flew towards Zorua, bristling with the power of a thousand bolts of lightning.

Scared that she wouldn't have enough power to break through Fang's Tackle, Fate strengthened her move, and managed to bust through. She landed on the ground, slightly swaying. She could feel her balance beginning to go lost. She slumped to the ground, looking up at Fang. She could lay here and wait for him to attack, right? As Fang readied Spark, Fate prepared to dodge, standing on her hind legs, ready to bounce away. He was coming, closer and closer. She bunched her muscles and a jolt ran through her. She felt every nerve in her shut down and she stood there, paralyzed. She watched as Fang got closer and closer. She stared right ahead and waited for darkness to catch her.

Brendan watched in awe as Tynamo charged at Zorua, now defenseless, lying there. He called out Fang's name, and to stop his assault, and an inch before collision, Tynamo came to a screeching halt, as if that was possible in mid-air. He went over and picked Fang up, praising him for his determination. The Eel seemed to smile slightly at Brendan, looking like it was about to burst into laughter. Brendan returned the smile, and walked over to Rose, and offered a hand. "That was a good battle. Now we train."

Fate was very surprised when Fang stopped right in front of her. Tiny sparks zapped all around her, threatening to collide. He was right in front of her now, her eyes staring into his. Then a great weariness came over Fate. She was still locked in place, though. She began trembling inside, waiting for this torture to end. It seemed to last too long then it should. Then, she felt the jolt loosened and she fell over and closed her eyes.
Rose, eyes wide, breathing hard, rushed over to the motionless Zorua. She picked her up in her arms and held her. She was merely fainted, nothing too bad...she hoped. She turned to Brendan, panicking. "Do you have something? A potion, anything!"

Brendan was stunned for moment, considering the situation. Then Rose yelled at him, and he had understood. Fate had fainted. Quickly, he sprinted towards where his pack lay. He rummaged clumsily through the sack, looking for the half-a dozen potions he had received at the lab. Finally, he brought out a spray-bottle like container. He walked over to Rose, reading the instructions as he went. "Spray thoroughly on Pokemon. Will cure status ailments, restore Hit Points, and revive unconscious Pokemon." He tossed a container to Rose, then retrieved another one and sprayed Fang with it. The effect was instantaneous - Fang sighed in relief, and felt much better. Brendan patted Tynamo's head, acknowledging him. "You did well Fang. Keep it up." He looked back at Rose, trying to reassure her. "Fate's just tired. It was a good battle. She'll be up and about in no time."
